Nokia's press release indicated that the Nokia 5800 touchscreen will first hit European markets in the fourth quarter of 2008. The first Nokia touchscreen mobile phone will arrive in the US and other markets during the first quarter of 2009. Unfortunately, the pricing information for this stylish device was not yet released.

The mobile phone maker hopes to reach out to the youth market by releasing a touch screen-based device. I think this is a great strategy considering that younger users are attractive to cool looking touchscreen handsets. According to Phonescoop, J.D. Power and Associates has released the findings of their latest study concerning the quality of cell phone calls. The research company relied heavily on customer experiences to discover the best call quality offered by US carriers.

J.D. Power and Associates names this analysis as the "Wireless Call Quality Performance Study." This is conducted about every 12 months. The performance of wireless carriers vary in every year so it has to be conducted yearly to provide accurate rankings.

Here are the factors being considered in the Wireless Call Quality Performance Study:

static/interference
failed connection on the first try
voice distortion
echoes
no immediate voice mail notification
and no immediate text message notification

The study was conducted on several geographic areas in the US. This means that some carriers may not do very well in some areas that they do not have full coverage. This will also inform mobile phone customers on the carriers that have the best call quality in their area.

West Region: Verizon Wireless was ranked first in this area.

3G iPhone Hot News

Now that the 3G iPhone has finally landed, I thought that it would be fun to posts the latest news. I have read about various news on the 3G iPhone and not all of them are good.

Let's begin with some hot iPhone news from Apple. Apple has reported that it sold its one millionth iPhone 3G . Steve Jobs proudly announced that, “iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend. It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”

Well, I think that this is not a total surprise. With all the hype surrounding it, there's no doubt that the iPhone 3G will sell well. The fact that it's also being offered in more than twenty countries around the world helped Apple to sell one million 3G iPhone units. The success of the original iPhone also paved the way for the next generation device.

Apple has also reported that the iPhone Apps Store is also a big success. More than 10 million applications from the new App Store were down loaded by Phone and iPod touch customers. The App Store now has more than 800 native applications, including over 200 offered for free. Customers also dis the fact that more than 90 percent of the applications are being offered for less than $10. I think the success also relied on the successful Apple hands4eeets and devices.

However, it's not all good news for Apple. The early reviews for the 3G iPhone are less than impressive. There were some complaints about the device's battery life. Apparently, 3G networks uses up a lot of energy and the new iPhone battery couldn't keep up. There were also complaints about the new software, GPS and on the activation process. There were some customers that lamented the lack of some features on the next generation iPhone.

To quell some of the negative rumors being leveled at their product, iPhone marketing head Greg Joswiak released some statements. He revealed that the iPhone maker has an internal priority list of features for the next generation device. Unfortunately, copy/paste support was not included, even though Apple went far down the feature priority list with the 3G version.

The head of iPhone marketing also clarified that there are no technical issues preventing turn-by-turn directions with the 3G iPhone's GPS feature. Joswiak also indicated that he is unaware of any technical reasons why an office suite isn't already in the App Store. He also admitted that the lack of a cross-application file structure could impede development on the device.

Virgin Mobile USA to Purchase Helio

Here's some interesting news from the wireless phone industry. According to a Reuters article, Virgin Mobile USA is set to acquire Helio, the U.S. mobile arm of South Korea's SK Telecom Co. The sum involve in this deal has not been disclosed and the deal is far from final. Sources have indicated that the terms agreed upon by both parties are loose.

The article also cited that this decision was reached because combining the struggling businesses of both parties was sen as beneficial. The announcement about this deal is expected to be released in the near future. However, SK Telecom did not offer any comments that would confirm this merge between struggling mobile phone carriers.

Mobile phone experts say that this is a good move from both companies even if there's no guarantee that the combined company will succeed. If the deals becomes complete, then SK Telecom can reduce risks from the U.S. business.

They expect the combination to work because Virgin Mobile has a scale and Helio has strong services. Some experts believe that the Virgin-Helio merge make sense because both companies target young customers and rent space on Sprint's network.

Helio is owned by SK who holds 69 percent and EarthLink Inc who governs 28 percent. According to the article, Virgin Mobile USA has expressed a desire to purchase the 69% of Helio owned by SK Telecom. However, there is no clear information whether Earthlink will sell its share of Helio to Virgin Mobile.

The initial terms of the agreement states that once Virgin Mobile USA takes over, SK Telecom would agree to invest a nominal amount of money in Helio. The agreement indicate that Helio will be injected into Virgin Mobile USA and the Virgin brand will be retained.

According to Portelligent Inc., the raw cost of materials to build the 3G iPhone could be nearly half that of the original model.

Portelligent Inc., an Austin, Texas-based teardown specialist, claim that their tests show that the iPhone 3G could have a BOM as low as $100. Some experts say that Apple decided to cut the cost on the next generation iPhone to be able to extend its toehold in the massive mobile phone market.

Gen2 iPhone pricing is aggressive enough that it made me think Apple's really taking the gloves off on this one. This is simply a standard legal maneuver by Verizon to preserve their legal claim against us. “We remain hopeful that we can resolve this matter without any further legal action by either party.”

Sprint is currently in negotiations with the FCC to ensure AT&T Inc. is not allowed to stray from an interconnection condition. The agreement was made when AT&T completed a prerequisite to gaining approval of its merger with BellSouth Corp a couple of years ago. It's logical that Sprint wants to avert future conflicts while they are dealing with Verizon's suit as well as other complaints.

MySpace, Sprint land mobile partnership

U.S. wireless operator Sprint Nextel Corp will make it easier for its cell phone customers to link to a free version of online social network MySpace.

Instead of typing the entire address, cell phone users will be able to connect to News Corp's service by clicking a link, the companies said in a joint statement.

The deal will also include links to News Corp's other Internet properties, including FOXSports.com and IGN.

Sprint Wireless to Launch Limited WiMax Networks This Week

Sprint Wireless plans to launch its XOHM WiMax network by the end of this week in Chicago and Baltimore-Washington, D.C. This initial launch will be limited only to Sprint employees and will focus on the central downtown areas of the test cities. This initial set of trials precedes the actual full trial networks that will be available to the general public starting in the first quarter of 2008. A sprint spokesperson said the company has 10,000 base stations ready to go, and will expand the coverage to areas that see high demand for wireless data. The company did not provide details on what devices its employees will be using, nor what devices consumers can expect to use once the full trials get underway.
