Carrier Conflict: Verizon vs. Sprint

Two major mobile phone service clash over interconnection issues!

Sprint became the target of a suit filed by Verizon Communications Inc. because of an alleged failure to ailing pay in interconnection charges worth nearly $10 million. The alleged unpaid fees originated from services in mostly eastern states that are subject to tariffs filed with the Federal Communications Commission. Apparently, even multi-million companies can fall behind on their bills.

Verizon expressed that the had no choice but to file the suit because they have already tried other methods of collecting the fees. Here's a statement form the suit:

“Verizon has repeatedly attempted to resolve this dispute short of litigation. Yet these attempts, made over many months and through both written and personal communications, have been fruitless. Accordingly, Verizon has been forced to seek relief from this court.”

In response to these allegations, a Sprint Nextel spokesman made this statement:

“Because Verizon’s claims in this matter are running up against a two-year statute of limitations, this complaint comes as no surprise. This is simply a standard legal maneuver by Verizon to preserve their legal claim against us. “We remain hopeful that we can resolve this matter without any further legal action by either party.”

Sprint is currently in negotiations with the FCC to ensure AT&T Inc. is not allowed to stray from an interconnection condition. The agreement was made when AT&T completed a prerequisite to gaining approval of its merger with BellSouth Corp a couple of years ago. It's logical that Sprint wants to avert future conflicts while they are dealing with Verizon's suit as well as other complaints.

Some Mobile phone experts fear that the XOHM network launch maybe be affected by this dispute. However, some feel that this fear is unfounded because $10 million dollars is a small amount and can be easily produced by a major mobile phone company such as Sprint.

I hope that both companies can work out this problem and that this dispute will l not affect any programs that may help wireless consumers.

Verizon Wireless To Introduce ‘Any Apps, Any Device’ Option For Customers In 2008

Today Verizon Wireless announced that it will allow customers to use any compatible device, application or software--even those not available directly from Verizon--on its network beginning next year. Verizon said it will publish technical standards that developers can use to create applications and software that can be used on its devices and network. It will also test and certify specific devices in its own lab. Any device or application that meets the minimum standards will be activated for customers who wish to use them. Verizon will be offering this new level of flexibility country-wide by the end of 2008. Verizon's existing retail sales model will remain in place, and customers will continue to be able to purchase Verizon handsets and services as they do today.

Samsung Brings Back High-End Cameraphone To Verizo

Samsung today launched the FlipShot U900, a 3 megapixel cameraphone for Verizon. The FlipShot is almost identical to the Samsung A990 launched on Verizon over a year ago, with a twist and flip clamshell design, 3 megapixel auto-focus camera, microSD slot and TV-out. Mobile Phone fans will have lots of fun creating or watching online videos with the help of this gadget.

The FlipShot upgrades the previous specs to stereo Bluetooth, a full color external display and LBS in a thinner form factor. It is available online from Verizon for $200 after 2 year contract. A red model will be available in Best Buy stores on November 26 as well.

Verizon to launch HTC Titan (XV6800) next on November?

The HTC Titan, also known as XV6800, was first reported back in February, but it looks like Verizon will finally launch the device during the next month of November. The online sales are supposed to start on 2 November, and you can find it on Verizon stores starting on 16 November. Take in consideration that this information is not confirmed, call it a rumor if you really want to.

In terms of specifications the XV6800/HTC Titan will support the wireless connectivity WiFi, and microSD memory cards to be used as external storage systems. Other features include a sliding (full) QWERTY keyboard so you can type easily, a 2-megapixel camera to shoot some photos/videos, 64MB of RAM, and 256MB of ROM.

Verizon Wireless agrees to settlement over marketing practices

State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced a settlement with Verizon Wireless Tuesday over what Cuomo called deceptive marketing practices for its unlimited Internet service.

Under the settlement, Verizon Wireless will pay $150,000 in penalties and costs to New York state and revise the marketing of its wireless Internet access plan. It will also pay an estimated $1 million in reimbursements to customers.

The company was accused of marketing its wireless Internet plan as unlimited, but then terminating accounts for excessive use. Restrictions on the plans were not clearly and conspicuously disclosed to consumers, according to Cuomo's office.

Verizon issued a state Tuesday saying that it cooperated with the attorney general's office and reached the agreement voluntarily.

"We are committed to providing clear advertising for our products and services, and we began updating advertising for our NationalAccess and BroadbandAccess data plans earlier this spring," the statement reads.
